Ramps and Tramps By Graystone

Graystone is all about pathway and they will be running 100 ‘intro to skateboard’ lessons for total newbies over the weekend delivered by their expert coaches - head to the stand early to get booked on and avoid disappointment. There will also be demos, giveaways, tunes and good vibes all day long as well as open skate sessions, so don't forget to bring your deck.

Sponsored by

The Technique Lab was set up by Warren Smith Ski Academy as a way skiers can train specific movements, ranges and muscles when not skiing and in a non-ski environment.

This is something that can be used all year round and is not reliant on snow or artificial ski slopes. By using these simple tests and exercises you can help maximise your body’s potential when you next get back on snow. You’ll also learn your physiological strengths and weaknesses which will empower you when you next get out on the snow and help when buying new ski equipment.

Main benefits

Understanding

Begin to understand what your body is and isn’t capable of. Where you need to focus your attention for physiological development. How these movement patterns and ranges affect your performance and ability when skiing.

Mobility & Flexibility

Learn to mobilise your body and improve your flexibility in certain ranges that are very specific to skiing. When you have to do so on snow the movement will be easier to find and develop.

Strength & Stability

Develop strength and stability in some key areas of your body that are essential for effective, accurate, skilful skiing. Understand which muscle groups are essential for skiing. Greatly reduce the risk of injury.

Equipment Knowledge

Learn how your ski equipment can aid or hinder your body’s functional ability to move when skiing. This knowledge will help when choosing and buying new ski equipment and discussing your needs with professionals.

These programs will give attendees education on how the 3 Way Lineage (combination of Ski Technique, Ski Biomechanics and Ski Equipment Precision) works for ski instructors and coaches, as well as individual skiers trying to improve by themselves. Everyone will get a chance to be assessed in the Ski Technique Lab’s 6 Way Foundation’ tests (explained below) and shown how to improve scores focusing on Functional Mobility, Stability and Strength Drills. You’ll be left with enough data and knowledge to build your own technique development program off snow and dramatically change your skiing before the winter season starts.

THE 6 WAY FOUNDATION TESTS

  1. LEG FLEX PATTERN TEST: By taking a measurement of how far each person’s ankle allows them to flex, we can tell early on if the simple mechanics of the sport will work or not. The ideal test range for safe skiing is between 10 and 15cm with equal range on the right and left ankle. Many skiers taking the test don’t meet the range needed and also show a difference between left and right.
  2.  SKIER SYMMETRY TEST: Symmetry describes how skiers manage their width of stance from the feet up to their hips and maintain a consistently symmetrical position. To test this range, we use our simple 10 second test where attendees try to pull their feet together on a slippery surface in a slow controlled movement without their knees dropping in. A weakness in this range is usually evident with most skiers and training is needed to get to the 10 second goal.
  3. LEG STEERING RANGE TEST: This describes the ability to inwardly rotate the outside leg of a ski turn. So, if you are turning left, it would be your inward rotation of the right leg which is measured, showing how effectively the ball is rotating inside the socket joint of the hip. Most people show a difference between left and right and many people show blockages on one side that directly effects their turns in one direction
  4. LEG FLEXION + EXTENSION TEST: Learning the correct action and understanding how to activate the outside leg is essential to achieving edge grip and pressure during your turns. Most people don’t ski with the available range they have and also have a difference between left and right. This test highlights this and shows how to develop quality in stability and mobility.
  5. BODY ANGULATION TEST (LEG LEAN): Learning how to move laterally and create angles in the body is a key factor in skiing and a movement range that many people struggle with, especially on one side of the body. This test identifies your limitation and also difference between left and right. It also gives you a chance to learn to move in this axis in a controlled manner with your hips in the best position for your individual physiology.
  6. CORE STABILITY TEST: Creating awareness of core strength and how to keep it activated whilst skiing helps deal with the pressure that skiing puts through the middle of your body. You’ll be tested on a LOW, MEDIUM or HIGH core stability rating based on how you perform on the test. Exercises are covered on how to develop this area.

Will Hughes

Will Hughes

I am a cross-country skier, competing as part of the British Performance Pathway affiliated with GB Snowsport. Last season, I lived in Lillehammer where I was a full-time athlete competing in the Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish junior cups. I started skiing in the UK when I was 14 as I was exposed to the sport from a young age being half Norwegian. At age 16 I was selected for the British Nordic Development Squad and last year I was chosen to be on ‘Project Lillehammer’. Being the only male athlete in the M19/20 age category in the British Performance Pathway and coming from London where there is no snow also motivates me to overcome the odds of competing in the hardest endurance sport in the world. I look forward to racing in Lillehammer this season as well as balancing university which I start this September at Newcastle.

Neil 'Nine Lives' Campbell

Neil 'Nine Lives' Campbell

When Neil Campbell was growing up he never thought he’d become a professional snowboarder. Growing up in Luton, he found himself getting into trouble in his younger years and was subsequently sent to prison at just 19 years old. On getting out, Neil vowed to turn his life around and he did just that, thanks to snowboarding.

Known to all as ‘Nine Lives’, Neil needed to fast track his riding to keep up with professional snowboarders and would copy whatever anyone else would do, having skipped the fundamentals along the way. He gained a reputation as the snowboarder with the most unorthodox style and trick list and – most importantly – his uncanny ability to always land on his feet, avoiding crashes that would end a normal person’s season, hence the nickname.

To keep the dream alive Neil would build and shape his local snow park in Milton Keynes and go on to work out in Austria and Switzerland. Last year along with Adidas Terrex ‘How did snowboarding change my life” was released a short documentary of Neil’s Journey.

Rachael Westbrook

Rachael Westbrook

Rachael Westbrook is the Founder of EcoSki, a one stop, sustainable ski and snowboard shop launched in December 2020.

Rachael grew up on a farm in Yorkshire and spent most of her Easter holidays skiing in the beautiful Scottish Highlands.

After 20 years working as an Asset Manager in London and 3 young children under her belt, she soon realised that her own children weren’t going to face the same future that she has been so fortunate to experience.

EcoSki was launched to help instill change within the skiing community, raise awareness of how impactful our clothing and consumption habits are on the environment as well as helping raise vital funding for non-profits at the same time.

In doing so, EcoSki helps outdoor lovers find quality clothing that doesn’t cost the earth. To ensure this better-quality, kinder kit is more accessible and affordable, she introduced a ski wear rental offering to the market last season, helping skiers continue to do what they love but reducing unnecessary purchases, waste and expense also.

Rachael encourages everyone to stop and think before making any purchase. Everything we do, consume and waste has an environmental impact. Every change counts and every fraction of a degree matters.

Maddy Hopson

Maddy Hopson

My name is Maddy and I am 25. I have mild Cerebral Palsy which affects the right side of my body. But despite this, I have been lucky enough to have been put on a pair of skis at the age of 5. Having struggled without much progress for many years I discovered Four Track Skiing and with the fantastic support of DSUK Tamworth has enabled me to ski with more stability, giving me more confidence to ski in the mountains which I love. Sadly finding adaptive lessons in St Anton, Austria where we ski is difficult and doesn’t appear to be priority – but I’m working on it! I am also a keen Platform Diver and the only coach in the UK with CP. Since the pandemic affected pools so much I haven’t been able to get back into that role. My aim is to work with the International Paralympic Committee and to encourage and enable more people who have disabilities to become involved and participate in snowsports.

I’d really love an opportunity to get involved with the snowshow! I live in Birmingham when not at uni so it’s so lovely to see the city I grew up in hosting this show. I’ve also been sharing details with the rest of the UoN club and am hoping to bring a group of us for the day.

Emma Farrington

Emma Farrington

I’m a ski instructor and race coach with 9 years of experience from around the globe, I am hugely passionate about snow sports and its connected industries as well as its development in the future as we try to become more sustainable. My friend from university and I run a blog called girls can climb mountains, a big part of this is my gccmontour hashtag that I use to document my ski career journey and adventures around the UK and worldwide. Since I was a teenager I have been enthusiastically sharing the word and experiences of the snow sports community with those from outside it, especially to those who come from inner city areas or lower-income families who sometimes take a view they will never be able to afford to ski or snowboard. I believe it’s important to share our industry and mountain experiences with as many people as possible.

I am doing a master’s degree in Sustainable Development and have had it reinforced to me how important it is for the future of the industry to practise sustainable business practices. Something I am always keen to share with my colleagues and clients is the beauty of the mountains as well as how much it is important we care for their ecosystems. I like to teach all ages as each age group presents a challenge and experience to learn from. I will always be found with a huge smile on my face whenever I hear someone mention skiing to me, it has given me some amazing life experiences and helped me overcome many fears. Snow sports brings together people with a love for everything snow related and I believe we should be doing more to keep people in the industry.
